Much has been made on the incredible impact social media has had on information dissemination in the wake of last week’s catastrophe in Japan. But it’s undeniable that for all our tools, we still haven’t quite figured out how to make sense of them in an organized way.

One need look no further than watching TV reporters point the camera at their MacBook Pro as they read tweets live as they appear in the stream. Theoretically, the blogosphere can help filter this vast chatter across the internet, and proactively respond to the most burning questions arising around the world as people sit helplessly awaiting more information.

I saw this in action over the last few days as Zach, Director of Planetsave.com, noticed that when Americans started searching for information as they awoke to news of the quake, thousands were specifically looking for information on loved ones stationed in the military on Okinawa. At the same time, that level of detail wasn’t something any mainstream sources were covering in the immediate wake of the disaster, as we all tried to make sense of the scale of the destruction, and the implications. But for those thousands of people, it was vital information, especially with voice communications jammed or down. Zach tracked down a reliable source and put together as comprehensive a report as possible under the circumstances, and got it live immediately. The comments speak for themselves, but to save you the click and scroll, by all accounts, this simple act saved hundreds of people hours and hours of worry. And it made me prouder than hell.

This “Okinawa’s okay” example is but a small hint of the ability blogs have to deliver niche information in efficient ways.

To be sure, blogs are only effective in this way thanks to the ecosystems of searching and sharing provided by Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Blogs would be useless without them, but the giants would be far less useful as platforms without the value provided by bloggers who are passionate about their niche.

Automattic and Matt Mullenweg specifically have done perhaps the greatest service to this cause, first by creating a commercially-viable, mega-scale self-expression free-for-all at WordPress.com, then by maturing an already-fantastic open-source blogging platform in WordPress into the most extensible publishing platform the world has ever seen through WordPress.org. The core platform itself is enough to make Gutenberg jealous, but the real feat is the massive, highly-engaged community of developers who use, love, and customize it to their hearts’ content. They’re doing things right, creating an ecosystem that lowers the costs associated with launching many ventures and projects on the web.

But they’re not doing everything right. Somehow, despite these two perfectly-awesome products, journalism hasn’t fixed itself, and it’s still the case that most people who start blogs (on either WordPress platform or any other) stop blogging regularly after a few months. And, only the biggest names from other (collapsing?) media can quickly establish themselves on their own (is Keith Olbermann doing a good job? Leave a comment). So, how can smart people start from scratch, grow, and like it enough not to quit? What’s the missing piece?

The reality is that .com isn’t quite extensible enough for the real needs of a niche publisher, and .org is still a pretty hairy road if you’re on your own as a person with ideas to share with the world but who’s starting from square one. The personality of a writer or journalist isn’t necessarily that of an entrepreneur. In my experience, most people who want to blog seriously basically want four things: 1) to be able to just focus on researching/writing/sharing, 2) to get paid, under a simple and fair system, 3) to do so on a platform with customized features, and 4) to do so along with others in a (virtual, usually) community. WordPress.com gets an A/F/D/A, while .org gets a F?/C?/A/F?

If these grades are even close to right, the inevitable conclusion is that you need to strive for something that gets B’s+ in all of those categories, from the perspective of content creators.

I could talk about how we host everything to address #1, use an open revshare for #2, experiment constantly with tools, features, and analytics options we can provide to meet #3, and aggregate our knowledge in a BuddyPress installation on this domain to address #4. But I’ve typed a lot and it’s late. I’ll update this post again when I can, but for now, I think I’ve made my point about why we do this.

If you’ve been to importantmedia.org before this week, you’ll probably notice that this site has changed–in form, function, and intention.

In general, we previously maintained a pretty standard “corporate” site, with relatively static info on our growing network of sustainability-focused sites, and some simple instructions on how to apply to get involved or get more information–but keeping the focus on the sites themselves. Last night, we soft-launched a more dynamic version of our central presence, showcasing the newest content created across our network each day, and providing a single place for our (logged-in) stakeholders to interact.

With this launch, we’re taking a major step in tying together the editorial teams of each of our sites into a single, coherent, community. From the reader’s perspective, each of our sites will continue to maintain its own niche brand identity.

However, from the perspective of the bloggers, editors, and creatives who make up the primary group of stakeholders on our network, we now have a single place for 7 primary goals:

Streamline story idea sharing between members

Streamline published story link-sharing for social media

Act as a storage/retrieval mechanism for admin docs and best practices

Streamline top-down announcements to the whole community, and subgroups

Act as a place for strategic discussions among ed community members

Streamline dissemination of financial/revshare information with visualization to teams

Streamline user engagement and laddering up of involvement

Features to tackle all seven of these goals aren’t fully in place now, but we’ll be continuing to build on our newly-launched base over the next few months–check back, or better yet, get in touch and help out!

And even with what should be working already, we’ve still got some tweaks to style, and styling to tweak (ok, quite a bit–this represents an overhaul of our entire application and onboarding process), so please see this as a work in progress!

If you have any feedback or questions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment!

I haven’t posted that often on this blog, but as we grow, I think I can start to dedicate a little more time to signs of life on our ‘corporate’ site. One of the things we did every so often back when were were called Green Options Media was publish random hilariously misinformed or unaligned emails that we would get. And we still get a lot of them, usually to old email address that are still in PR databases somewheres.

So, to wit:

Hi There, My name is Tina from stabproofvest.org.

I am the SEO and marketing manager over here. As you probably know, having backlinks from related sites helps increase your rankings in Google. Well, I was just doing a search on Google.com for “Body Armor News” and your site popped up! This is you, right? http://www.cleantechnica.com Well, check it out… Since we both target a similar audience, Google will give us BOTH extra love if we each place a simple link to one another. Not a lot of work and plenty of benefit to both of us.

I know you probably get requests like this all the time, I know I sure do. So, to stand out, I went above and beyond by setting up a customized page telling my site visitors about your great site! Check it out right here: http://www.stabproofvest.org/links/cleantechnica.com I think I’ve ALREADY sent you a few visitors! And, that’s just the start! If you feel like returning the favor, simply pass this message on to your web master and ask them place a friendly link from your homepage pointing to my site (stabproofvest.org).

…blah blah blah. A few comments from me (feel free to chime in with your own):

1) Yes, Cleantechnica is one of our sites. No, I do not see it on the first few pages of Google for the term “body armor news.” I’m sure she does, though.

2) WOW, THANKS for going above and beyond with that link to us. Unfortunately, I don’t see any way to interpret a link on cleantechnica.com to stabproofvest.org as “friendly” — interesting choice of words to associate with STAB-PROOF VEST.

3) Wait, is this even from a real person? Aw man, you mean I wasted all this time making fun of your personalized bot spam… geez, NOW who’s the idiot? Me.

How egregiously annoying are these emails? SO.

So, it’s been a few months since I’ve updated this company blog.

In that time, the network has grown by leaps and bounds, but unfortunately for poor importantmedia.org, most of the action happens on our 13 individual sites (find them in the dropdown bar at the top of this page!).

But, it’s always helpful to provide a little context around our progress. So, here goes:

* Important Media sites are back to publishing 10-20 posts every day. Some of our sites are getting 3, 5, or even more posts up per day, meaning that there is far too much content for even me to appreciate all of consequential content we publish on any given day. I say “back to publishing” because at its peak, Green Options Media (from which most of our sites have evolved) topped out at 30+ posts each day. But we’re getting there.

* Across the network, we’re back up over 1 million pageviews a month. It’s still not a huge total (before the recession, Green Options Media topped out at 2.5 million pv/mo), but considering our traffic numbers when we re-launched the network under the Important Media banner earlier this year, getting back to a million is quite an improvement. How much of an improvement? Since our relaunch, traffic growth has averaged close to 20% each month.

* We’ve undergone a complete revamp of our backend infrastructure, along with a spiffy new network-wide theme (we use, and love, WordPress), which is customized for each site.

* The open, fully revshare-based editorial compensation model we launched with hasn’t been perfect (anyone with their own blog knows how much work goes into ramping one up…), but I strongly believe my key assumptions about how it could work have been validated. Our mantra of decentralization–without sacrificing the benefits of centralized cooperation–has been empowering for the editorial team, although we’re still working on the balance.

What’s next, you say? Well, you’ll just have to stay tuned.

Doesn’t it seem like everything in the world is getting more and more precarious? Things seem uncertain, cloudy. Even though most of us try as hard as we can and always mean well, it’s easy to question the effect we’re having as individuals.

Well, at Important Media, we think there’s only one solution: do something, and share it with others. Which is why we’re back on the recruiting warpath. We’re finally ready to start adding new members to our editorial team, and we have tried extremely hard to create a role that could be a fit for just about anyone who has intelligent, interesting, and most of all, important information to share with the world.

To find out more about joining our editorial team as a Site Editor, Freelance Author, or Guest Contributor, start by checking out our Write with IM page. Or, browse our FAQ, or any other part of this site.

We’re still working on a lot behind the scenes, including a complete redesign of all of our sites over the summer, so stay tuned!

Cheers,

Man, things are happening fast over here at the new Important Media virtual office.

We had barely put new editors in command on 5 of our 10 blogs when the editorial opportunity of a lifetime presented itself to us. I’ll just come right out and say it: Jame O’Keefe, the master pimp behind the ACORN sting, the daring Landrieu phone-company infiltration, and many other brilliant opii (that’s the plural of opuses, right?) of new and social media, will be coming on board to anchor our environmental politics blog, Red, Green and Blue.

No photo credit, except to O'Keefe for landing her.

That’s right, the man who has defended the rights of the underprivileged since his early days at Rutgers (who cares if his campaign to protect Irish-American heritage by banning Lucky Charms failed? It brought attention to an important issue on campus) will now be documenting for Important Media the environmental injustice created by our corrupt political system.

We don’t want to give away too much yet, but keep an eye out for scathing takes on the most important environmental boondoggles of our time, from the folly of encouraging local food and fuel production, to the excesses of Big Pot and its heavy-handed tactics in trying to cram “new tax dollars” into our pockets.

Okay, you got me. Not a very well-planned April Fool’s Joke. But seriously, I do want to announce that Important Media is officially back up and running, having soft-launched our new writer payment system and editorial structure. We’ll be refining things quite a bit over the next few months, but we’re committed to placing one foot in front of the other and making constant progress throughout 2010.

Want to get involved?

We’re still looking for highly-motivated long-term editors for four of our 10 blogs: Inspired Economist, Ecopreneurist, Green Building Elements, and (sorry to disappoint, all you O’Keefe fans) Red, Green and Blue.

All of our writers and editors are compensated on an innovate revshare system, and editors retain a spot on our network-wide decentralized editorial board. Want to see if you’re a fit? Visit our very comprehensive “how to apply” page here.

I’m looking forward to a wild few months and we slowly bring this blog network back to life. More to come, soon.

Hello everyone!

You may have noticed some new activity across the former Green Options Media blogs in the last few days: RSS feeds rumbling to life, Tweets and Facebook posts appearing… and that’s set to ramp up as Important Media gets underway.

Although we consider it a soft-launch–with many bugs to squash and features to develop–starting April 1st, writing on the network will once again be a paid endeavor.

To that end, we’ve begun reactivating editorial positions across the network. Planetsave, Eat.Drink.Better, Crafting a Green World, Ecolocalizer and Feelgood Style will all be back up and running this week under a new (or old!) editor, those editors will be building their writing staffs, and we’ll see how we can help the writer community take shape in a way that reflects the vibrant past of this blog network.

I look forward to making more progress, and all the challenges that come with it.

Thanks,

David

Welcome! My name is David, and I have an announcement to make:

It is time to say goodbye to Green Options Media.

But that doesn’t mean that the constituent parts of Green Options Media are going away. Indeed, the momentum created by Green Options Media in 2008 has had more of an effect across the web than we ever could have expected, as people and blogs that were supported by the network slowly metastasized (yes, a bad metaphor), creating content and important conversation where there otherwise would have been less or none.

People who saw their first ongoing paid blogging gigs with us now regularly blog for the New York Times, Fast Company, and many other mainstream outlets. Blog and bloggers who contributed to the growth of Green Options Media back then are now spread throughout the web, improving on the original Green Options model with the founding and building of their own networks, including LiveOAK Media and Simple Earth Media.

Okay, okay, GO Media made a few waves. But what’s happening to Green Options?

As of today, GreenOptions.com is a full fledged community, running on Huddler’s innovative forum/wiki/product platform.

Cool. But what about the other blogs?

Say hello to Important Media.

Go to importantmedia.org/advertise for an updated list of the 10 founding Important Media titles.

Looking to get in on the ground floor? Go to importantmedia.org/workwithus.

Thanks for stopping by!
